Year 6 Discover the Science of Illusions
Today in Science Enrichment, our fantastic Year 6 pupils explored the amazing link between science, maths and creativity!
They discovered that an image persists on the retina for one sixteenth of a second, a principle known as persistence of vision. This is what makes optical illusions possible and is the reason animations work! From cartoons to flicker books and even traditional thaumatropes, the children were fascinated to learn how our eyes and brain work together to create moving images.
Putting their learning into action, they then experimented with curve stitching, carefully creating intricate patterns that form beautiful parabolas. By combining mathematical precision with artistic flair, they saw first-hand how maths underpins design and engineering.
Our Year 6 Science Enrichment sessions take place each half term and are designed to broaden horizons across STEM. We love seeing curiosity, creativity and critical thinking in action!
